An excellent read from many different perspectives. Rob provides an unique blend of fun stories with deep and meaningful life lessons. We all can see a little of ourselves in many of these stories. Fun way to learn some valuable lessons without going through the pain or awkwardness of learning them on your own. My favorite concerned an Austin Grande Dame facing the changes of the years adding up too quickly. Rob takes you through his discovery that she had lost the driving privileges for her Rolls Royce, but then shows you how she retained her power and her pride. The lesson Rob is teaching with the story is about being persistent and subtle at the same time, but his beautifully drawn mini portrait left me with the warm certainty that the most important character qualities survive through every decade.
Rob's view of Texas high society is one from being right in the mix (or, more appropriately, room). The nuggets of wisdom he weaves into the stories are incredibly insightful. With each chapter, he takes you through a lesson based on his unique experiences and you finish the chapters thinking two things 1) can I figure the real names of these masked characters? and 2) how do I apply his perspective to my own life?
This is a perfect book for any Texan who lives or dreams to be in the flurry of the social scene. Or for anyone who wants to tap into the similarities of all people. Rob's personal story he tells throughout the book reminds me everyone has the a story of their lives filled with some drama, romance, laughs, plot twists and tear jerks.
For those of us in Austin, it's a roman a clef about the movers and shakers in our social scene, with thinly disguised names of the players. For anyone else looking to break into the black tie and charity balls circuit in their own city, it's a how-to manual with summed-up lessons at the end of most chapters. A page-turning romp for a fun afternoon's reading.

Local Austinite and man-about-town, Rob Giardinelli, shares his insights into the life lessons he has accumulated as he has traversed the high-society lifestyle over the last decade or so. What I particularly loved about this book were the glimpses into his past, growing up with a big Italian family near Philadelphia, and how his background informed his assessment of life with the upper-echelons of society.
Rob’s takeaways include his own personal growth within a structure that can sometimes have negative impacts on people, which could cause some, probably, to become jaded or superficial. He works to look for good in every situation, and I respect and admire that. Perhaps that’s a great lesson in itself to reinforce- to find the good and the positive impact within every situation.
I especially found memorable the section toward the beginning on Texas, with personifications of each major city here. It’s an exceptionally original way of looking at the Lone Star State, and one that keeps coming back to me and making me smile. Worth the read…. and if you know the players in and around the Texas and LA event circuit, it’s fun to try and guess who’s who, as all names have been changed!
