Hollywood, 1941

Ray Ward spends nights thinking about his brother's death and the blood-soaked days that followed. Dean Fokoli is off the force, disgraced by his dirty dealings, left to scrape for pennies as a private eye.

When Ray receives a mysterious package from his sister containing a plea for help and a reel of 8mm film, there's a problem – Ray doesn't have a sister.

Now two former enemies must team up, travel halfway across the country to search the dark shadow of Hollywood's spotlight. In for more than they bargained for, Ray and Fokoli plunge behind the silver screen to unearth tinsel town's dirty secrets. And two men with nothing left to lose can stir up some serious trouble.

"Meticulous historical detail slams you into the hard boiled world of Ray Ward and Dean Fokoli as they use hard fists and cold steel to knock the shiny off Hollywood's glitter. Borrowed Trouble is like a talented fighter – powerful, quick, and hard to put down."
Rebecca Cantrell, NYT best selling author of the Hannah Vogel mysteries

"For a knockout punch of hardboiled, look no further than Borrowed Trouble, sequel to the period noir One Too Many Blows To The Head. You'll want to go the distance with Ray Ward, a tough-luck protagonist who knows how to hit where it counts!"
Kelli Stanley, author of City of Dragons and City of Secrets

"Everyone has a short list of books that stayed with them long after they turned the last page—add Borrowed Trouble to mine. Eric Beetner and J.B. Kohl have vividly re-created 1941 Los Angeles, ripping apart the city’s glamorous façade to reveal the cold noir heart beneath. With sharp writing, head-spinning twists, and pair of protagonists haunted by memory and loss, this is pulp fiction at its finest."
Hilary Davidson, author of The Damage Done and Blood Always Tells

“Borrowed Trouble is the hard hitting sequel to Kohl & Beetner’s noir knockout debut  One Too Many Blows To The Head. It grabs you by the lapels from the first page and drags you out of the murky corners of Kansas City’s underbelly and into a glittering Hollywood where the bright lights cast sordid and sinister shadows.”
Paul D. Brazill, crimewriter, The Mammoth Book of Best British Crime

“An intriguing tale of two outsiders thrust unwillingly into the dark side of 1941 Hollywood. A seamless collaboration, rich with explosive dialogue and scenes so vivid, Kohl and Beetner takes the reader on a compelling journey. Rich with prose that packs a powerful punch, Borrowed Trouble is not to be missed.”
Deborah J Ledford, author of Staccato and Snare

"It’s 1941 and noir’s hot new duo, Kohl and Beetner, return with another sure-fire winner. Borrowed Trouble is a relentlessly tough and lean novel, packed full with memorable characters. United by their troubled pasts, the unlikely pairing of PI Dean Fokoli and troubled boxing promoter, Ray Ward, head from Kansas City to Hollywood to untangle a dark tale of greed and exploitation, but ultimately one which offers them both a shot at personal redemption. They don’t write them like this anymore. Jump onboard now."
Nick Quantrill, author of Broken Dreams and The Late Greats

Borrowed Trouble Ray Fokoli Book 2 edition by JB Kohl Eric Beetner Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

In the second Ray and Fokoli novel, Beetner and Kohl take the two main characters from "One Too Many Blows To The Head" and inject them into an entirely new story. Rather than being a sequel, this book is a full story in its own right and you needn't have any familiarity with the first book to read this one.

Not a boxing story like "One Too Many Blows," this story takes place two years later and is in many ways an ode to the pulp detective stories of the forties and fifties where there's always a young girl, missing, and the subject of blue movies. Here, Ray and Fokoli can't resist a young damsel in distress' cries for help and the former boxing manager and former police detective, both at odds with officialdom, hop on the train and head out to Hollywood to rescue the lady from the evildoers.

It is a solid story filled with action of all kinds. There are the blue movies, the grifters, the movie studios, the secret peepshows, the stars on Hollywood Boulevard and two guys out of their element and in over their heads. It is a full-bore, action-packed, rockem, sockem, fight. No question who the good guys and the bad guys are.

The authors do a great job of capturing the spirit of Los Angeles with its endless boulevards of broken dreams and sleazy motels and miserable characters. You can almost hear "LA Woman" playing in the background.

This is simply righteous good stuff. Nuff said.

as the first one, but with pace and well written.

Evolves around what I guess would be the start of snuff films in 1940's Los Angeles.

But, as said, not as good as the first novel by this couple of Authors
I love this genre and Beetner and Kohl have found a really compelling narrative and rhythm. The characters have some depth, the story is great but mostly the writing is very good. It reminds me a lot of Elmore Leonard. In just a few short months after discovering Beetner's book The Year I Died Seven Times (which was great fun), I've read all Beetner and Kohl's collaborations and most of Beetner's other novels, and I'm hooked. Keep them coming.
Amazing, vivid descriptions, super hard-boiled characters, excellent noir tale. 1940s Hollywood was something else, and with this book I had a good long look at its seamy underbelly.
This is the second book about Ray Ward, a tough boxer, and Dean Fokoli, a disgraced ex-cop. This book picks up the two a couple years after the events of the first story. The duo finds themselves in LA chasing down rape and snuff film producers. Once again, they leave a lot of spilled blood and dead bodies in their wake.

I enjoyed this story. The characters are interesting and even though they are violent and work outside the law, you are pulling for them against some very despicable trash.
And exceptionally readable.

I actually think this is more of a 4.5 star book, but I rounded up ). There were a couple of little things I thought might have been improved upon, but that's just me. I could elaborate, but it might reveal a little too much, and skewer other readers' reading enjoyment.

The story is excellent. The action is jaw smacking. The characters, grey and very, very bad, are wonderfully (and wickedly) described--the main ones actually being carried over from "Too Many Blows to the Head" (another dinger of a book). And the surprises.... well, you'll see. As one reviewer mentioned, this book probably isn't for the faint of heart.

Hope there's another book coming from these two. And Eric... give us another hitman story (a full novel and nothing less). JB, I'll be checking out your other work.
Borrowed Trouble is not the typical sequel. The first book, One Too Many Blows to the Head was a gem. I don't know anything about boxing or people connected with that occupation, but that didn't interfere in any way with my enjoyment of One Too Many... The characters are rich and real and everything was explained very clearly while still maintaining the atmosphere of a story. It never came across like reference material about fighting. All you did when you finished reading that one was anxiously await the sequel.

Most sequels are extremely boring and simply try to cash in on the success of the original. It is rare that a sequel can stand on its own merit. Borrowed Trouble is the exception. While it does help you to understand the primary characters and their relationship to each other to have read the first book, it is not necessary. There's sufficient backstory in Borrowed Trouble to enable that story to stand on its own. There isn't too much however, and Borrowed Trouble never lingers too long in the past or drags you into the prior story. It's just enough to familiarize you with the unlikely pairing of these two characters.

I enjoyed Borrowed Trouble very much. I've read other books that had more than one author and there are generally points where you can see where one left off and the other began. Not so with One Too Many Blows... or Borrowed Trouble. The story flows flawlessly throughout both books, and never misses a beat. The characters stay vivid throughout both books and I have to say, I don't know if there are currently any plans to continue to another book, but I would certainly hope there is. All I wanted to do when I finished Borrowed Trouble was to pick up the next. I will anxiously await another sequel and I sincerely hope these authors will provide one.
